Question #5 Nov. 23rd, 2010

Without God's wisdom, we stumble in our reasoning, think with our feelings, and accept lies for truth. Just what does thinking with our feelings look like?

Describe how these characters showed lack of wisdom.

Esau-

Genesis 25:29-34 (New International Version, ©2010)

29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[a])
31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33 But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
   So Esau despised his birthright.

David -

2 Samuel 11:1-5 (New International Version, ©2010)

2 Samuel 11

David and Bathsheba
1 In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.) Then she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

2 Samuel 11:14-17 (New International Version, ©2010)

14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.”
16 So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.

Sarah -

Genesis 16:1-6 (New International Version, ©2010)

Genesis 16

Hagar and Ishmael
1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.

  2. Esau -
He sold his birthright for immediate gratification of food because he was hungry. (He didn't think about the long-term consequences)

    David -
Instead of fleeing the temptation, he acted on his thoughts of lust for Bathsheba....and then one step further to have her husband killed.

Sarah -She became impatient with God and took matters into her own hands.

  3. Esau-feeling of caring only for his need of hunger,
David-feelings of lust ended up in murder
Sarah-feelings angry at waiting so long caused her to take control of something God promised He would take control of.
